Welcome to the Brewers!
by posted 03/11/2021

Hello Parents and Players!

My name is Garrett Hillstrom, and I'll be your manager for the upcoming GFBLL Spring Single A baseball season with the Brewers.  I'm excited to start playing!  Please reply to me via email or text to confirm your receipt of this message.

We will be focused on the following three items throughout the season:

1. Safety - For obvious reasons.  There are right and wrong ways to conduct oneself on a ball field, and each player will be taught so.  If your player has any health or medical issues we should be aware of, please let us know.

2. Fun - I love the game of baseball.  I started when I was 5 years old, played through college, and have been coaching little league for the last 4 years.  I want to instill that same love of the game for others.  My philosophy at this age is that a player will want to continue to play, and thus improve their skills, if they are enjoying it.  We're going to relax and have a good time!

3. Fundamentals/skills – This is a team sport, and we will practice and play as a team.  We will have practices that incorporate the mental and physical aspects of the game.  No matter what skill level your player is currently, we expect each player will make excellent progress in their development.  At this age, winning takes a distant back seat to development.  Every player will get to play every position (unless they don’t want to).

Communication:  Primarily you'll hear from me via this email address.  My cell is 540-497-0358 should you need to chat or text.  I encourage you to go to the www.gfbll.com page as well for other info (e.g. schedule, rosters, etc.).  Please pass me a cell number or post it on your profile in case there are last minute changes to games or practices that you'll need to get notified about.  And please let me know if your player will be missing a game so I can plan accordingly.

Practices:  Practices will be every Tuesday from 5:30-7:30pm at the new Central Sports Complex (we'll be at Field #4).  The complex is located at 5405 Rodgers Dr, Warrenton, VA, near Dominion Energy.  First practice is Tuesday, March 16th!  I don't know that we'll go to 7:30pm every time, but I'll see how the boys do.  We will be working on the basics: catching, throwing, and swinging.  I will challenge each player according to his skill level.

Gear:  The league will provide jerseys and hats.  Please have white pants and navy blue socks for games.  I encourage you to have your own helmet but the league has provided some.  For all practices and games, your player should have a hat and a protective cup.  If you're purchasing a bat, please be sure it has the USA logo on it, otherwise the league will not allow it.  As for bat size, for this age your child should not be using anything longer than a 26-inch bat.  Anything larger than this is likely to induce poor swing mechanics.  Please make sure your child's glove is broken in so they have a better chance at catching the ball.  Dick's and Rankins True Value are two good spots to shop locally.

Fan/Parent behavior at games – Please keep in mind that this is little league baseball.  Our players will learn more from what we model for them than anything else.

Also, I would strongly encourage you not to “coach” your player during a practice or game.  During these times, please just keep to cheering and encouraging them.

Sorry for the length.  I'm excited!  We're going to have a great season!  Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.  See you all Tuesday!

Go Brewers!
